Disney World Employees Dig Through Trash to Find Wedding Bands

It’s been a while since we posted something here that wasn’t awful - so here’s a feel-good story for today.

Paul Campanale and his wife Karen, from Massachusetts, were staying at Disney World’s Wilderness Lodge and Resort. As they were packing up to leave the park last week, Paul accidentally threw out a cardboard bowl - inside the bowl were Karen’s engagement ring, wedding band, and a five-year anniversary ring!

When they initially asked park employees about trying to retrieve the items from the trash (it had already been collected from the room), they were told that recovering the jewelry was pretty much impossible. With their plane waiting, the Campanales and their two children had no choice but to head to the airport on Disney’s Magical Express bus from the resort.

But back at Disney, the Wilderness Lodge executive housekeeper, Drew Weaver, realized that the garbage from the building where the Campanales had stayed hadn’t reached the trash compactor yet. He and seven other Disney employees emptied a parking lot waste bin and waded through bags and bags of trash, eventually finding the rings.

Weaver and his team met the family at the bus’ next stop to deliver the jewelery.

Weaver told Boston’s ABC-TV affiliate,”That’s not the first time we’ve gone through trash. We don’t always find things. Many times we come up empty. But we didn’t this time!”

Mondale-Ferraro Phone Ad from 1984

If you’ve spent any time on YouTube the past couple of days, surely you’ve seen the parodies to the Hillary Clinton “Who do you want to answer the phone at 3 am” television ad.

Sorry to break it to all the Hillary fans - it wasn’t very original. Take a look at what the Mondale-Ferraro campaign did back in 1984, when the topic of the day was Reagan’s Star Wars initiative:

Yahoo may cut up to 2500 jobs

An anonymous tipster is circulating the news across Silicon Valley that web giant Yahoo has put together a list of 1,500-2,500 jobs that might be on the chopping block sometime in the next two weeks.

CEO Jerry Yang will make the decision to go forward with these layoffs later next week. Apparently, Yang wants to announce the cuts with or before earnings are announced on January 29th, but may not make them if the stock price recovers.

This is a big cut - up to 20% of their 12,000 person workforce.

The folks over at Mashable have a great story on this.

Comcast Resets Your Cable Box to Their Channel

If you’re a Comcast Cable subscriber in Southwest Florida, you may have noticed a new trick that they’re pulling on you.

When you turn your converter box off, it conveniently resets the channel to channel 8, a local cable station that is an affiliate of their MyTV network. When you turn the box back on, it doesn’t go to the channel you were last watching, it now goes to channel 8.

Why are they doing this? Well to increase viewership of their own channel, of course. And more viewership means better ratings, higher potential advertising dollars, etc., etc.

Other stations in that local market have begun to question Comcast’s practice of resetting the channel, as it could potentially affect their standings in the ratings.

Steve Pontius of the local NBC affiliate told the News-Press that for now, “it appears to be more of a nuisance than an actual ratings infringement. But anything that is a nuisance to my viewers is a nuisance to me.”

Sure seems like it could skew the ratings to us. If we leave our TV on one channel when we shut it off, we sure expect it to stay there when we come back.

Now watching TV in that part of Florida will become as annoying as watching TV in a hotel… don’t you hate it when the TV reverts back to the hotel’s own programming when you shut it off? What a nuisance to have that happening in your own home.

Anyone else have a similar experience with Comcast or another cable or satellite provider? Leave a comment and let us know.
