Northeastern grocery chain Hannaford Bros. has reported that they have been the victim of a data breach.
On Monday the company reported that roughly 4.2 million credit and debit card numbers were exposed and could possibly be used for fraudulent activity.
Today, the Philadelphia law firm of Berger & Montague announced that it filed a class action lawsuit in U.S. District Court in Portland, ME. The suit alleges that the supermarket chain was negligent in providing adequate security for computer data containing credit and debit card transaction information.
The class action suit is one of two against the Maine-based grocer. The other lawsuit was filed in U.S. District Court in Bangor, ME and named Melinda Ryan as the lead plaintiff.
Hannaford released a statement saying that the company is cooperating with credit and debit card issuers to ensure that those customers who may be affected by the theft are protected from fraud.
Aside from stores in the Hannaford chain, the breach also affected Sweetbay stores in Florida, and some independent grocers in the Northeast that carry Hannaford products.

I live in Florida also and had money stolen out of my account. My bank was so stupid they refunded my money but didn’t change my account and the money was stolen again the very next day! I heard SweetBay was going to be giving an incentive to everyone that was affected but who knows if that is true or not. I need to know what I can do to join the class action suit. Please email amandaph2006@yahoo.com.
I went to sweetbay about 2 weeks ago and the VERY NEXT DAY I had 4 charges of exactly $75.00 used at a Raceway and Amoco in Miami. Luckily my bank caught the error and refunded my money as well as sent me a new card with account number. Send me some info about the class action as well. Thanks.
I would like to join class action against Hannaford. I live in New York State and was inconvenienced due to Hannaford’s breach. Advise how to join class action. Thanks
Obviously, these crooks are based out of Miami where my credit card was used yesterday. Discover spotted the fraud, emailed me and closed my account. I contacted a class action attorney in Tampa - James Hoyer 1-800 651-2502. Get in touch with him. Also call Hannaford/Sweetbay fraud hotline at 1-800-591-4580. Hope this helps!
