For starters, they didn’t release the new version download until 10:00 AM, PDT - so people who had been passing along the news, joining the Facebook group, and reading blogs about the arrival of FireFox 3 were confused when they couldn’t figure out how the heck to download it!

If that wasn’t bad enough, now that it has finally passed 10 AM in California, Mozilla’s servers are unprepared to handle the onslaught of downloads. Mozilla.com has been slow or unresponsive for the past 45 minutes. When you finally can get into the site, it still shows FireFox 2 prominently at the top of the page, with 3 hidden underneath as only a “sneak peek.”

This is something that we would have expected from Microsoft, certainly not FireFox.

Stacey Fearnall, a 36-year-old waitress at Nathaniel’s Restaurant in Owen Sound, Ontario thought she was doing a good thing by participating in a Cops for Cancer fundraiser. She raised more than $2,700 for the charity by shaving her head bald.

However, the management at Nathaniel’s thought differently, and fired her on the spot when she showed up to work with her shaved head.

The mother of two was told by her manager to leave after she refused don a wig, and according to her husband, was in tears when she returned home from the restaurant.

Nathaniels owner and head chef Dan Hilliard has tried to defend his decision with local media by saying that the restaurant has certain standards to uphold.

While the restaurant’s owners said they told Fearnall they wouldn’t be pleased if she participated in the fundraiser, they did not come right out and tell her she’d be sacked if she shaved her hair.

Fearnall chose to participate because her father died of cancer five years ago, and a cousin and close friend of hers are currently battling the disease.

According to the Canadian Cancer Society, nothing like this has ever happened with past fundraisers.

Should she be allowed to keep her job? Let the management at Nathaniel’s Restaurant know!

A Woodland, California high school senior with cancer is being denied the honor of walking with her class at graduation because she has one class left to catch up over the summer.

18-year-old Leanna Elizalde has had two cancer surgeries since December, and endured weeks of radiation therapy that left her behind in her studies. She worked hard and was able to catch up in all her classes except for English, which she plans to finish at summer school.

Leanna’s mother Lupe Ramirez attempted to persuade the school to allow Leanna to walk in the graduation ceremony with her fellow students, as she plans to finish her class over the summer. Despite talking with the vice principal, the principal, and school district officials, she has been rebuffed at every turn.

Woodland High School administrators have refused to comment to any press regarding this incident.

Leanna’s doctor at the University of California - Davis, Robert Canter, has even gone so far as to write a letter to Woodland High School principal Evelia Genera hoping to encourage the school to reconsider their decision, saying that refusing to allow her to graduate with her class would be perceived as a punitive action toward his pediatric cancer patient.

Whatever the outcome for participating in the ceremony, Leanna plans to make up her unfinished English class work during summer school. She already has her cap and gown, and has hopes that Woodland High School will reconsider their decision before Pomp and Circumstance starts playing this Saturday morning.

What do you think - should Leanna be allowed to march with her class, provided she finish her studies over the summer? Let the Principal and administration at Woodland High School know!

Canadian doughnut and coffee chain Tim Hortons fired a single mother when she gave a free doughnut hole (known at the chain as TimBits) to the child of a frequent customer.

27-year-old single mother Nicole Lilliman of Ontario told the Canadian Press that TimBits are frequently handed out free to dogs or young children. However, three managers approached Lilliman after her shift on Wednesday, saying that she had been caught on the store’s video surveillance system giving free food to a child.

At first, Lilliman believed she was being given a warning, not being fired for theft. She had worked at the store for three years.

After a media firestorm of complaints against the chain, Tim Hortons responded with the following statement:

Unfortunately the action of the manager of this location was not appropriate, nor grounds for dismissal. With an apology from management, Ms. Lilliman has been rehired by the franchisee.

Lilliman has decided to return to work, however at a different location than where she was originally employed.

Parents in the suburban Los Angeles community of Woodland Hills were outraged when they discovered that teachers and staff at Woodlake Avenue School were not following the Los Angeles Unified School District’s guidelines for flushing campus drinking fountains. If the fountains are not properly flushed each day, students are subjected to high levels of lead in the drinking water, due to aging galvanized pipes that the district has failed to replace.

The 30-second flushing policy, required on each fountain head, has been in place for nearly 20 years, yet tracking of this important task only began six months ago across the nation’s second-largest school district.

A concerned parent (who also happens to work for the Los Angeles water board) tested water taken from one of the fountains at Woodlake Avenue Elementary, and found levels of lead at 110 parts per billion gallons - almost eight times higher than the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s recommended limit!

Woodlake Avenue is not the only LAUSD school to fail a lead test. Visits to more than 150 campuses took place recently, and the district’s Office of Environmental Health and Safety reported that logs on whether flushing took place were incomplete at 26 schools.

Woodlake parents told the Los Angeles Daily News that they first became wary about the school’s water quality after their children were told by teachers not to drink from its fountains. However, the school has refused offers from parents to pay for a private company to provide drinking water for the students, and the school also prohibits students from bringing their own bottled water from home. If they are thirsty, they have no choice but to drink unsafe water. More zero-tolerance nonsense.

Think the school should allow students to bring bottled water to class until the pipes get fixed? Let them know:

It’s been a while since we posted something here that wasn’t awful - so here’s a feel-good story for today.

Paul Campanale and his wife Karen, from Massachusetts, were staying at Disney World’s Wilderness Lodge and Resort. As they were packing up to leave the park last week, Paul accidentally threw out a cardboard bowl - inside the bowl were Karen’s engagement ring, wedding band, and a five-year anniversary ring!

When they initially asked park employees about trying to retrieve the items from the trash (it had already been collected from the room), they were told that recovering the jewelry was pretty much impossible. With their plane waiting, the Campanales and their two children had no choice but to head to the airport on Disney’s Magical Express bus from the resort.

But back at Disney, the Wilderness Lodge executive housekeeper, Drew Weaver, realized that the garbage from the building where the Campanales had stayed hadn’t reached the trash compactor yet. He and seven other Disney employees emptied a parking lot waste bin and waded through bags and bags of trash, eventually finding the rings.

Weaver and his team met the family at the bus’ next stop to deliver the jewelery.

Weaver told Boston’s ABC-TV affiliate,”That’s not the first time we’ve gone through trash. We don’t always find things. Many times we come up empty. But we didn’t this time!”

When Louisa Lippitt died in 1912, she left $4,000 to Rhode Island Hospital on the condition the money be set aside for the purpose of providing a permanent free bed for needy patients.

A successor to the charity that she selected to administer her gift discovered her bequest when it was digging through its archives, and found that the free bed is long gone. Now, the charity, Children’s Friend and Service is suing the hospital to get the health care bequest back.

The hospital claims that it already provides millions of dollars in free care, but the charity said the hospital needs to do more to fulfill the pledge that it made 96 years ago when Lippitt made her donation.

If it had been modestly invested, Swirbalus said, Lippitt’s donation might be worth about $1.5 million today.

On Tuesday, a judge will hear arguments on the from the hospital, which filed a motion to dismiss the lawsuit.

In their defense, Hospital officials say interest from funds continue to help cover health care costs for people who can’t afford them, though not through a specific hospital bed.

A hospital spokesperson said the money donated for free beds was put into a restricted account that pays for charity care, but she could not say how much was in that account or how much of its funds are spent annually.

Children’s Friend does not expect the hospital to set aside a bed that would be available only to the their clients. Rather, they want to ensure that its clients receive free care in whatever bed they’re treated.

The hospital also argues that Children’s Friend and Service does not have standing to sue because it did not even exist when Lippitt died and is separate from the charity she named in her will, Children’s Friend Society of Providence. Children’s Friend and Service claims that it is a successor of that group - called Providence Children’s Friend Society - and inherited its right to nominate patients when it formed in the late 1940s.

The executive director of Children’s Friend said the group discovered paperwork on Lippitt’s free bed while going through their archives several years ago in preparation for an anniversary celebration.

The charity sued in November after negotiations stalled over whether the charity had the right to nominate patients to Lippitt’s bed.

Other lawsuits have been filed in the past over how hospitals have spent their free bed funds, one of them by the state of Connecticut. In that 2003 lawsuit, which is still pending, it was alleged that Yale-New Haven Hospital hoarded about $37 million in donated funds.
